During the Norwegian crab (Cancer pagurus) fishery around 20 tonns of bait, mainly pollack, is used daily. Four artificial baits were developed (Bait 2, 3, 4 and 5) and their perfomance in terms of CPUE were compared to pollack. In all baits, fish skin was the major ingredient (ca 50%), and the enzyme transglutaminase was used as a binder. In baits 3, 4 and 5, protein concentrate (bi-product from filet industry containing 90% protein on a dry weight basis), blue mussels, and cod roe were used as attractants respectively. No attractant was added to bait 2. Bait 4 and 5 performed sigificantly better than pollack, while the oppsosite was the case for Bait 2 and 3.
