Summary Fishing is one the strategic sectors in the Mediterranean area in terms of economic growth and employment. However several issues may hamper its development on the long run such as low profitability and competitiveness, impact of catch limits on marginal areas characterized by poor job opportunities and lack of an appropriate common strategy at Mediterranean level for small fishing communities. In this complex framework, FISHINMED aims at protecting and enhancing small fishing communities, thus increasing employment opportunities as well as preventing the uncontrolled exploitation of sea resources.
• Definition of strategies for the socioeconomic development of small fishing communities • Setting up of a system for the technical support and assistance to small fishing communities to diversify activities and strengthen the competitiveness of fishing operators • Enhancement of the role of Mediterranean small fishing communities
