Summary This study investigated anticipated special problems in wild fish based on data needs also from EFSA. Focus was on inorganic arsenic. Total arsenic concentrations in cod muscle ranged from 0.5 to 110 mg/kg wet weight. The concentration of inorganic arsenic ranged from <0.002 to 0.006 mg/kg wet weight. In Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) the concentration of total arsenic in samples from the back ranged from 2.4 to 15 mg/kg wet weight, whereas concentrations in samples from the abdominal side was slightly lower and ranged from 2.5 to 14 mg/kg wet weight. All the samples showed concentrations of inorganic arsenic below the limit of quantification at 0.004 mg/kg wet weight. In herring, the concentrations of total arsenic in the investigated samples ranged from 1.8 to 3.4 mg/kg wet weight, while the concentrations of inorganic arsenic were all below the limit of quantification of 0.003 mg/kg wet weight. Further in mackerel, total arsenic was between 1.1 to 4.7 mg/kg wet weight, while concentrations of inorganic arsenic ranged from less than the limit of quantification (i.e. 0.003 mg/kg wet weight) to 0.006 mg/kg wet weight. Also in the slow growing Greenland halibut total arsenic in the investigated samples were rather high and ranged from 2.1 to 48 mg/kg wet weight, while concentrations of inorganic arsenic were less than the limit of quantification of 0.003 mg/kg wet weight in all the samples. This showed that there is little knowledge to gain about the toxic inorganic arsenic by analyzing total arsenic. The concentrations of inorganic arsenic, methyl mercury, PBDE and PFAS in 800 fish samples of different species were determined and all analytes studied were low.
