Summary The project will initiate, build and strengthen long-term collaboration and collaboration with leading North American research communities working in biological fields that are directly relevant to building knowledge and thus contributing to sustainable growth in Norwegian aquaculture. We seek to achieve this through mutual visits and exchanges between American, Canadian and Norwegian researchers to discuss relevant research topics, challenges and activities for the aquaculture industry. These research environments will, through participation in research activities within the CtrlAQUA center, contribute to an increased understanding of the physiological mechanisms behind adaptations in post-smolt in closed and semi-closed facilities. Particularly relevant will be a better understanding of the salmon's ability to exchange gas and regulate the acid-base balance under intensive operating conditions in closed facilities. This is expected that knowledge acquired through the project contributes to improved growth, health and fish welfare in post-smolts under intensive farming conditions. The exchange of postgraduate and doctoral students will be facilitated by making tissue samples from ongoing research activity available to student projects. Furthermore, the project will open for collaboration with the new recycling facility at the University of British Columbia (inSEAS center) where they also work with Atlantic salmon. The project will therefore be an important tool for the development of a strong, long-term and functional research collaboration between the participating research environments in Norway and the USA and Canada.
