Summary The background for the project, according to the project request from FHF, is a desire from the industry to find out if there is a different weight development of the gonads for female and male herring throughout the year. It is in the industry's interest to clarify whether this difference in weight of gonads affects the total content of strokes in female and male herring, and further whether this difference in gonads affects fillet yield for female and male herring. If this is the case, it may be profitable to fillet female herring in the months of October – December. The project is well anchored in FHF's action plan for 2012 (pelagic sector) in that the project will increase knowledge about quality deviations (quality differences), and provide the opportunity for better quality management, by making the best possible use of raw materials throughout the season. You also get a larger volume with improved yields.
Since the fish collected in this project can also be used to increase the data base in parallel FHF projects carried out by SINTEF Fiskeri og havbruk AS, the project will also be relevant for the priorities ""individual-based sorting and quality management"" and ""total utilization of fish raw material"".
Goals:
1. To investigate whether there is a different weight development during the year of the gonads for females and males in Norwegian spring-spawning (NVG) herring.
2. To investigate whether the content of sloe is different throughout the year in female and male herring.
3. To investigate whether there are different fillet yields throughout the year in female and male herring.
4. To investigate whether these parameters (in points 1–3) vary with fish size and catch field.
