Monitoring of the contamination of marine fish by organic pollutants, trace metals and radionuclides is performed on a regular basis to contribute to the assessment of the status and to develop indicators for a sustainable use and development to protect the marine environment. In the framework of the marine protection conventions Oslo-Paris Convention (OSPAR) and Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) and the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) the results are part of the assessments published in the Quality Status Reports to provide the public and the political decision-makers with reliable information. In addition, environmental monitoring data of contaminants in marine biota are used for risk assessments and initiate further investigations with respect to the safety of marine food and feeding stuff based on marine fish. In this context, scientists participate in/cooperate with following international working groups/committees: OSPAR-SIME, OSPAR-MON , HELCOM-SGQAC, HELCOM-MONAS, HELCOM/MORS-PRO, ICES-MCWG Research cruises: annually 2 cruises FRV "Walther Herwig III", since 2005 one of this every 5 years only.
