CETOBAPH's main objective was to better understand the deep marine ecosystems that surround the Canary archipelago, because this is one of the few places in the world with coastal populations of deep-diving cetaceans, such as beaked whales, pilot whales and sperm whales. These large predators perform the same function as felines on land, and have adapted to exploit differentiated resources at depths that can exceed two kilometers. The project managed to collect data on new deep-sea species, oceanographic phenomena on the islands, and on the distribution of biomass and marine productivity.
