This review focus current knowledge of minimum dietary requirement of EPA and DHA for Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout related to optimal growth, feed efficiency, fish health and -welfare and amount of EPA+DHA in the fillet. When marine ingredienses decrease in fish feed they have to be replaced by other lipid and protein sources. It is therefore just as pivotal to determine the upper tolerable limit of dietary omega-6 and fytosterols and optimal levels of monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids which sustain optimal performance, robust fish and optimal EPA+DHA in fillet. Such knowledge will enable future fish feed formulation to be based on dietary requirements and upper tolerable levels of fatty acids. Where current knowledge is vague or absent the report identify and describe knowledge gaps.
