Summary King crab is the most valuable species currently exported from Norway. In 2021, Norway exported king crab for a total of NOK 999 million. However, the export only concerns king crabs of commercial sizes, i.e. >16 kg which are mainly fished in quota-regulated areas, east of 26 degrees longitude. In the free fishing area (FFO) west of 26 degrees longitude, the king crab is defined as an undesirable species, and it is therefore a stated aim to fish out as much of the king crab as possible from this area to reduce further spread along the coast. The rule is that all king crab that is fished, regardless of whether it is from quota-regulated or from FFO, must be transported to land alive, i.e. on-board production is prohibited. However, there is a lack of reception facilities and therefore most of the king crabs fished in FFO go either for silage or for destruction. It also cannot be ruled out that small king crabs are re-released, consciously or unconsciously, by using large mesh sizes in the nets. The king crab is a unique species as it is highly adaptable and a social animal, i.e. the crabs thrive together and can go in groups and feed in the same vessel or cage in the sea without them starting to harm each other. A targeted fishery for small king crabs followed by feeding to improve quality can have great potential given that you succeed in making a feed that the crabs grow and thrive on.
Main objective:
To develop a cost-effective dry feed that is nutritionally correctly composed for king crab.
Sub-goal:
To develop a feed and feeding regimes for king crab that provides optimal growth, ensures good environmental conditions and safeguards animal welfare.
