Until recently, salmon lice and the fish's response to the parasite have only been studied separately. Analyzes of the interaction between host and parasite are a powerful tool for understanding more of the salmon's protection mechanisms against lice. Material will be collected from the laboratory and from field studies that rank salmon by resistance to lice. The aim of the project to use a genetic analysis that enables one to identify genes that can determine how well the salmon lice "like" the salmon. This can be a measure of the salmon's resistance to the parasite in salmon and thus promote the development of measures against the parasite. Such a complex genetic analysis - so-called multiple gene expression profiling - means that you follow the process where a gene - through manipulation - is transformed into proteins that you want to study. The profiling measures the presence and quality of one or more proteins in a particular cell or sample.
