Summary The purpose of the project is to develop an electronic system that registers, classifies and sorts fish in a trawl without harming the fish. The system will make it possible to select fish to be caught and release unwanted fish. The system will be based on image analysis methods that Scantrol has developed for classifying fish on board fishing and research vessels. The methods that have been developed have very good accuracy and large capacity, but significant R&D efforts are required to transfer this technology to live fish in water. We will develop two sorting mechanisms for use on commercial fishing vessels: one for sorting a single fish and one for sorting a quantity of fish. In addition, we will develop a model intended for marine research where there are no requirements for sorting, but where there will be higher requirements for accuracy.
Our goal is to develop a commercial product that will be marketed internationally for fisheries and marine research. On commercial trawlers, this will help to catch the fish that the skipper wants based on quotas, market conditions and fish stocks, which will contribute to the sustainable utilization of fishing resources. Research vessels will be able to use the system to register fish deposits in an area without catching the fish. This will provide opportunities for a better basis for stock estimation with less use of resources. The partners in the project represent users of the technology. TRG has significant ownership interests in Norwegian and foreign fishing companies, and the Institute of Marine Research spends large resources on test trawling with its own and chartered vessels.
