Project outputs will provide an evidence base to support co-ordinated and cost-effective implementation of the Marine and Coastal Access Act, the Common Fisheries Policy, and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. The main audiences for project outputs will be Defra, the Statutory Nature Conservation Bodies, Regional Advisory Councils, the European Commission, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, policy makers, managers, the fishing industry and the MPA Fishing Coalition (MPAC), scientists, non-Governmental Organisations dealing with fisheries and environmental issues and any other parts of society interested in, and affected by, management of the marine environment. The knowledge and experience gained during this project should underpin advice that places Defra in the strongest possible position to lead and inform discussion on fisheries and environmental integration in national and international contexts. The project is structured to challenge the assumption that more, and more complex, data, monitoring and assessment tools are necessarily required to support the integration of fisheries and environmental management. The project will focus on the extent to which improved practice and general principles can legitimately be used to provide advice on fisheries and environment interactions, and the ways in which the processes can contribute to supporting both fisheries and environmental management.
