This exploratory project is primarily expected to contribute to our understanding of the ecological niche of marine microplastic and answer general questions such as: what are the prokaryotic and eukaryotic species inhabiting this ecological niche? Is there polymer-specific biota composition of species? Are there opportunistic pathogens which may be introduced into the food chain and pose a threat to humans? How does the plastisphere composition differ between geographical regions and habitats? Are there seasonal variations in plastisphere composition? Answering these questions will improve our understanding of how novel substrates provided by plastic pollution may alter the functioning of ecological systems, indicate potential hazards and help policy makers to make knowledgeable decisions about plastic litter management.
