In coastal purse-seine fisheries on pelagic species like sprat, herring and mackerel, increased efficiency in live transportation and storage may be vital to increase value. This project presents three experiments where the pelagic species herring and mackerel are transported in a newly developed towing-bag (Bargo TM). In 2005, Norwegian fisheries on pelagic species had a value of 6,0 Bill. NOK. The coastal fleet represents 26% of this quantity. The results indicate that the new method is both more lenient and at least four times faster than traditional towing, but also that it has to become more solid.
