The aim of the study is to assess EU policy on the mitigation of incidental catches of cetaceans in EU waters, focussing primarily on harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata). Specifically the study will provide: (1) A description of the status and the incidental and accidental catches of the above mentioned species in EU waters; (2) An assessment of the outcome of Regulation (CE) 812/2004; (3) An assessment of the outcome of Directive 92/43/EEC on the above mentioned species in EU waters.
