Summary The High North has received increased focus industrially and politically as a result of enormous mineral and petroleum deposits. The EU and China have shown special interest in this. The geological deposits in combination with the retreat of the polar ice mean that there is an increase in maritime activities in the north. This entails new regulations and the need for the development of new systems and methodologies that enable operators in this area to meet the requirements set.
Star Information Systems is one of the largest suppliers of maintenance management and information systems to ships and offshore installations internationally. The overall idea of the project is therefore to meet the increased maritime activity in the north through the development and implementation of methods and systems for safer operation in polar sea areas, but also for marine operations in other parts of the world. The methodologies and systems developed in the project will be implemented as part of the information systems on board and ashore, and the effect of the applications will be verified on vessels and platforms that currently actually operate in the north.
The project will take care of the regulations for maritime operations, follow the introduction of the Polar Code and develop applications that are adapted to expected requirements as a result of this.
The main goal is to be achieved by realizing the following sub-goals:
- Specify which regulations and provisions are relevant to the target group
- Transfer experiences from the implementation of safety management systems within the Icelandic fishing fleet
- Use research-based methods for safety and maintenance management
- Develop requirements specification and function specification for the program systems
- Implement the program systems
- Evaluate the program systems together with pilot customers, research environment and supervisory authorities
The products will be exposed to new market segments such as the fishing industry and shipowners / authorities operating in polar regions when the product has been developed and tested.
