In the 2011 season, several crab fishermen in Central Norway and Nordland experienced a declining crab fishery in early summer, and the crab was generally of poorer quality in the main season. The following questions were asked: 1. was the seasonal variation in 2011 natural or man-made? 2. has the catch of crab in an extended season resulted in less access to good crab in the main season? 3. can the seasonal variation in quantity and quality be related to temperature variations in the sea? 4.What about the extended spring season, are there areas with alternative crab populations that can be used? The planned project is in line with FHF's Action Plan for 2012. The project is also in line with Møreforsking Marin's strategies and focus areas. The same applies to the Institute of Marine Research, which is the advisory body for the management of crabs. The planned project will mainly look at the crab fishery in Central Norway and Nordland. In these areas, the following division of the season is common, and will be used further in this project description: Main season: August through October; Extended season: May through July and November through December; Out of season: winter months January through with April. The main goal of the project is to uncover resource and financial consequences of catching bag crab outside the main season. Specific goals are: 1. To describe quality and catch composition in the extended and in the main season on traditional fishing grounds. 2. To describe the quality and catch composition of non-traditional fishing grounds "offshore" in the main season on traditional fishing grounds. 3. Find possible connections between crab populations "offshore" and in traditional fishing areas. 4. Assessment of resource and financial consequences of catch in the extended season.
