Troika Seafood will investigate whether there is a market for live sea urchins in the same way as they have built up a market for live king crab. The producer is Norway Sea Urchin in Båtsfjord, and the basic idea is to utilize the same logistics and customer network that Troika has built up on king crab. It is known that there is a market for live buns. A challenge that has been encountered in small trials at Troika is how to pack live sea urchins, especially with a view to putting it back in water when they reach the market. At random visits, the company has seen different ways of doing this. Various customers who have participated in tests have requested that it be packaged as Hokaidoboller, as Americans do, etc. For live crabs, Troika has come up with an optimal packaging and shipping method that the company is satisfied with. The company's Russian researchers quickly gained access to the industry's standard for packaging. This helped to get started, and since then this has been taken further with R&D work at Nofima and the same Russian researchers. In collaboration with Nofima, Troika is planning a study trip to Australia, New Zealand, the USA and China for the study of live crabs and lobsters. In this connection, it is considered to set aside extra time to also look at the packing of sea urchins, and how this industry is organized.
