Summary "The availability of cod in the market primarily comes from commercial wild catch, which is mostly seasonal. The cod market is significant, and there is considerable interest in cod aquaculture for a stable supply of fresh fish year-round. In Norway, there is increased interest in cod aquaculture, with four hatcheries established and two more in planning in a short period.
Cod is a promising candidate for aquaculture, it is a popular fish with a large global consumption. Until now, fresh cod has only been been available during a seasonal fishing, but aquaculture allows for availability all year round. As with many other marine species, there are problems with the initial feeding phase, and juvenile stages of cod in aquaculture have challenges with generally low quality, poor growth and survival. Much of this is related to suboptimal nutrition in the first days of the fish's life. In the EarlyCod project, we will combine CryoPlankton from Planktonic with micro diets from Sparos. CryoPlankton is natural plankton that is cryopreserved and stored in liquid nitrogen. You just thaw the CryoPlankton in seawater and you have live feed right off-the-shelf. Nutritionally, CryoPlankton is optimal for the growth and development of cod larvae. In EarlyCod, in addition to finding an optimal protocol for the larvae, we will also improve the digestion of the live feed. Several measures will be tested, and it is expected that one or more of these will have an effect on digestion. All other live feed will be replaced with CryoPlankton from Planktonic and micro-diets from Sparos, and this will result in better quality fish and reduced workload at the hatchery. EarlyCod will help us enter a growing market, and more hatcheries for cod are under construction. Both Planktonic and Sparos will be able to generate significant revenue from feed sales as a result of this activity. The research institute CIIMAR, Portugal, is a partner in the project, and will focus on the cod's immune system. Gadus Group and Nord University are subcontractors in the project. At Gadus Group the feeding protocols will be testet in an industrial scale, while genetic analyzes will be performed at Nord University to study the general quality of fish fry.
After a small-scale testing phase, an optimized feeding protocol will be tested at a commercial cod aquaculturist. Cod production is expected to increase significantly, and Planktonic expects a market share equivalent to approximately NOK 25 million in this market within 5 years."
