Aquaculture remains highly dependent of fishmeal protein and its procurement still relies on exploiting wild fisheries. Any reduction in its utilization by farmed fish would reduce the ecological burden of aquaculture and improve its sustainability. We hypothesize that these environmental benefits can be addressed by feeding carnivorous fish with glycerol-supplemented diets. Fishmeal is partially replaced by a less expensive, non-nitrogenous ingredient in surplus in the global market, therefore reducing feed costs, a major contributor the operational budget of any fish farm. To test this, we must effectively demonstrate the metabolic utilization of glycerol as energy substrate without compromising optimal growth rates.
