The aim of the project is the development and verification of semantic models that, based on species- and rearing environment specific welfare indices, access animal welfare in pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The developed models shall offer easy to apply, meaningful tools, which can be implemented from fish farmers, authorities and other bodies to evaluate animal welfare in the target species. They will base on the index models published from Stien et al. (2013) and Pettersen et al. (2014) for the evaluation of animal welfare in salmon aquaculture in net cages (Salmon Welfare Index Model (SWIM) 1.0 and 2.0). The work plan includes the analysis and transmission of SWIM on pikeperch kept in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and rainbow trout kept in flow systems and RAS. Animal welfare indicators used in SWIM were checked for validity for pikeperch and rainbow trout in their characteristic rearing environments and merged. Based on existing literature and practical experience valid indicators were species- and environmentally specifically defined in classes and weighted. The models were completed with species- and environmentally specific indicators, which were not mentioned in SWIM, e.g. gas supersaturation, pH, turbidity, species-specific pathogens and other factors yet to be determined. The course of the project is structured in four work packages: WP1: evaluation, completion and weighting of animal welfare indicators of SWIM, based on existing literature and practical experience. Creating model designs for discussion in an expert panel WP2: discussion of the model designs with experts from science, practice and veterinary medicine. Revision of the models on basis of the discussion results WP3: testing of the developed index models for validity and use in practical operation, if necessary adjustments WP4: reporting.
