BASSET-MED aims to provide key information on biodiversity and marine ecosystems of the Central Mediterranean Sea – Strait of Sicily, on ecosystem services, human activities and the risk of degradation of these ecosystems caused by human pressures and climate change. A better understanding of ecosystem functions and biodiversity in such environments will allow for a more accurate assessment of the consequences of loss due to over-exploitation of natural capital, to help evaluate the environmental and socio-economic feasibility of any land management plan. These also represent prerequisites for the development of a marine spatial planning (MSP) framework capable of integrating the ecosystem-based approach to management, with particular attention to fisheries, fish stocks, vulnerable species and habitats. marine. Marine and coastal ecosystems also support the Blue Growth agenda, and for this the project also aims to evaluate the links between ecosystem services and those required by the Blue Growth agenda.
