The FAO-AdriaMed Project (Scientific Cooperation to Support Responsible Fisheries in the Adriatic Sea) is a Regional Project executed by FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The Project aims to promote scientific cooperation among the Adriatic nations. Its goal is to improve the management of fishing activities in conformity with the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (FAO 1995). AdriaMed aims to contribute decisively to enlarging the scope of information on the Adriatic Sea, related to shared fishery resources, knowledge that is often fragmented and localised to different territories. The Project also contribute to lay the basis for regional cooperation in management of the shared multi-species fisheries in the Adriatic Sea through the organization and successful implementation of sub-regional research programmes, training activities, the establishment of scientific networks, the development of national capacity. It also provided, support to the national fishery statistics programmes, for the establishment of regional databases and contributed to upgrading of national capabilities in the management of fisheries. (1) Strengthening the sub-regional network, involving relevant institutions of the fisheries sector to follow up on aspects of scientific coordination and cooperation; (2) Supporting the establishment of a sub-regional fisheries monitoring system, based on standardized research methodologies; (3) Identification of management schemes to be applied on a pilot scale in selected zones towards strengthening the international and regional cooperation; (4) Supporting shared resource management decisions, including the promotion of harmonized fisheries legislation; (5) Supporting the development of responsible mariculture, in particular for the enhancement of positive interactions between fisheries and aquaculture.
