Astaxanthin is a necessary additive to salmon and trout feed for the meat to turn red. The price of commercially available astaxanthin in free form is around NOK 15,000 per kg and astaxanthin amounts to approx. 20% of the feed costs for farmed fish. The biomass of zooplankton in the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea is estimated by marine researchers to be 200–300 million tonnes, and represents a significant alternative feed resource for aquaculture. The most important catchable species are the krill species Meganyctiphanes norvegica and Thysanoessa inermis , and the amphipods Themisto libellula and Themisto abyssorum . Meganyctiphanes norvegica and Calanus finmarchicus contains 93–46 and 30–85 mg of astaxanthin / kg wet weight, respectively. Commercial salmon feed contains 30–60 mg astaxanthin / kg. This means that it may be possible to cover some / all of the astaxanthin requirement, depending on the amount of admixture of krill meal or oil in the feed. This presupposes that the stability and bioavailability of esterified astaxanthin is as high as for synthetic astaxanthin in free form. To investigate whether astaxanthin from krill can be an alternative source for dyeing salmon and trout.
