"Blocking fish is a demanding and expensive work process. This is typical seasonal work (February and March) which is considered extensive, both in terms of work and costs. As of today, there is no robust system that streamlines this process. After several conversations with the dried fish industry, it was concluded that the industry has a need to automate this work process so that financial gain can be achieved in the future. The goal of this project is to develop technical solutions to automate the blocking process. Sub-goal 1. To create an efficient automated blocking machine, where the work process is integrated with the current ""production line"" and in line with today's requirements for blocking for hanging. 2. To test out a prototype in a company. 3. To provide manpower savings – and therefore financial savings. 4. To improve health, environment and safety (HSE) by: o removing a heavy job through simplification of the process o ensuring consistent quality of the barrier job. The central part of the development has been to develop a system based on concrete needs, with a focus on continuing an old tradition. This means that there was no aim to change the working methodology other than the blocking process itself. The machine available in the summer of 2012 is a finished prototype that is ready for industrial installation. It solves the task in an efficient, safe and gentle way. The rope is tied in two loops around the spur of two fish where each loop is secured with steel clamps. It is an advanced and precise production process that is programmed down to the smallest detail. The machine is designed with great emphasis on the tough production environment it will work in. It is designed and built from quality components, intended for industrial use. The machine is based on both compressed air and electricity. All sub-elements have been tested individually before prototype models were put together. Testing and development have been carried out at the manufacturers, which has created a basis for improvements and adjustments. The result is a more comprehensive machine than the project was based on. There has been a lot of research and testing of the rope/pressure and cramp combination. It was also a key point that hanging on a shelf was tested, this was done at Røst in March. The 30 barriers that were hung went through very harsh weather conditions during 2 months and passed the test well. No barriers went up. They were still tight and nice. It is considered that all the objectives of the project have been met. The locking machine is planned to be installed in a production environment with testing and demonstration for the industry at the end of August 2013. This will take place at Røst."
