The successful production of aquaculture reared juveniles of the endangered dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) allowed to plan the first pilot restocking of this species in a Sicilian coastal area. A protocol for responsible restocking was set up based on the principles of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (FAO, 1997). Before releasing, fish were monitored for genetic, sanitary status and morphological abnormalities. Trials on feeding performances on live prey were also performed to enhance juvenile feeding capacity in natural environment. Tagging trials enabled to monitor grouper after release through "visual census". High rate of sightings after release demonstrated the feasibility of dusky grouper restocking practice.
