The main object of this project is to increase the survival of halibut larvae and minimize the use of chemicals in halibut farming. A new blend of ingenuous or favourable bacteria will be developed and the effects of treatment at various stages in the production process investigated. The bacterial strains used are isolated from the environment and digestive system of halibut larvae in tanks where growth and survival of larvae proved better than in other tank units. The bacteria will be added to the tanks to control the bacterial flora during the first production stages in halibut farming and the effects of treatment evaluated by monitoring the growth and survival of the larvae as well as changes in the bacterial pattern which will be correlated with growth and survival of larvae. Previous research indicate that stability affects the growth and survival of larvae to a big extent and the main objective is to promote a stable environment during these susceptible stages of the production. Furthermore, there are indications that the knowledge acquired can be transferred to production of other species and increase the overall success of marine aquaculture in Iceland.
