Aker BioMarine is harvesting krill (Euphausia Superba) in the Antarctic Sea. The company produce products both for human consumption as well as for aquaculture and animal feed markets. The principal objective of present project is to develop and document health-promoting and competitive products from krill within the global food supplement market. More specifically, we will conduct preclinical studies to document the effects of 2 different krill products: krill oil and krill powder. Studies will be focused on three different areas: a) metabolic syndrome, b) inflammation, and c) cognitive function. In addition to animal studies, the project aims to document the effect of krill oil and krill powder in human. 3 different clinical studies will focus on: a) up take of omega-3 fatty acids, b) effect on cardiovascular diseases and inflammation, and c) the effect on metabolic syndrome and regulation of endocannabinoids. Several national and international partners are involved in the project and include both academic researchers as well as contract research organizations (CROs)
