A novel approach to reduce the ANFs and increase the nutritional value of Soybean meal in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) diets

The continued rapid expansion in aquaculture production and the limited availability of fishmeal has changed the feed formulation for Atlantic salmon dramatically over the last five years. Soybean protein is one of the most promising plant protein sources as fishmeal substitute because of high protein content and relatively well balanced amino acid profile. Soy bean meal (SBM) and soy protein concentrate (SPC) contains a wide variety of ANFs. Throughout this PhD-thesis, experiments will be carried out too investigated in which manner a specific exogenous enzyme complex especially designed for SBM and a commercial enzyme complex "Synergen" can hydrolyse different components in SBM and SPC, and increase the nutritional value of the ingredients when fed to Atlantic salmon. A specific enzyme complex able to hydrolyse ANFs and increase the nutritional value of SBM and SPC will be produced by solid state fermentation in collaboration with one of the world's leading biotechnology companies (Alltech, USA). The ingredients will be pre-hydrolysed under controlled incubation and the processing parameters for hydroxylation of ANFs in the ingredients will be optimized. Fish feed with either pre-hydrolysed ingredients or untreated ingredients where the enzyme complex is added during extrusion on a pilot extruder at the Nofima Feed Technology Centre will be produced. Potential effect on the extrusion process and change in pellet quality will be investigated. The effect of different processing condition of SBM and SPC on digestibility of crude protein, AA, carbohydrates, lipids and minerals will be investigated by using mink. The most promising treatments will also be evaluated in a feeding trial on Atlantic salmon. Growth performance, nutrient digestibility, carcass composition, deposition of minerals and histology will be investigated.
