In this project we will construct an electric kayak drone equipped with advanced echo sounders and optics as standard. The drone will allow scientific marine surveys in shallow areas unavailable for larger vessels, and replace time-consuming data collection and provide additional information on fish behaviour and coverage in expensive oceanic and coastal surveys. The acoustic data collected with the drone will be of the same format as used in standard acoustic surveys, which is a tremendous advantage as both post-processing systems and data bases already are available. Thereby, the data can easily be scrutinized, processed, stored and used as input to contemporary assessments of the marine environment and fish stocks. This allows implementation of new cost-efficient technology without jeopardizing current time series information. We aim to achieve a speed of 10 knots which is the typical vessel speed during an acoustic survey, but in other experiments it is more important that the drone is silent and has long endurance. During the project we will test the drone in three different studies; 1) conduct small-scale acoustic transect surveys with the drone on selected sandeel grounds in the North Sea to examine the potential of reducing cost and vessel time in future acoustic surveys, and carry out two-stage adaptive surveys with the drone on a sandeel surveys in the North Sea to evaluate the gain with respect to survey coverage uncertainty, 2) study the backscattering characteristics of migratory fish schools in a non-alert behavioural situation at long distance (1-3 km) from the research vessel with the drone working in silent mode at low speed, crossing the school repeatedly with acoustic and optical instruments. , and 3) conduct small-scale surveys on fish and fish larvae in coastal waters close to a large seabird colony at Runde Island on the western coast of Norway.
