Infections with Ichthyophthirius multifiliis often lead to high mortalities especially in farmed trout. Currently, no effective therapeutics are approved for treatment of infected fish for human consumption in the EU. New approaches for the reduction of the parasite load will be developed in AbiAqua. The amount of infectious stages of the ciliate in the water is aimed to be reduced by nanofiltration and by blocking the transmission of the pathogen. Methods that can inactivate parasites in the water, that can prevent host finding and may remove pathogens from the water will be tested. Additionally, new vaccination strategies will be developed. All methods will be tested separately and in combinations. The project will be performed in three phases. In phase one, nanofiltration, blocking of transmission and vaccination strategies will be tested under controlled conditions. Effective methods will be combined afterwards under semi-field conditions. In phase two, the scientific results from phase one will be transferred to praxis and will be tested in different combinations in two trout farms with regard to their effectiveness. In phase three, the results of the studies will be summed up to provide presentations and leaflets with management strategies for veterinarians and fish farmers.
