Microalgae are among the first brought to attention when it comes to renewable energy. Their diversity accounts for the wide range of biofuels that can be derived from microalgae (i.e. biodiesel, biohydrogen, bioethanol, biogas etc.). The microalgae can be also used in a series of biotechnological applications to produce added value compounds such as long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, neutral lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, pigments, vitamins etc. Nevertheless, reliable monitoring and control tools are required to sustainably develop microalgae industry towards achieving stable performance and process traceability. The ALGROW project aims to develop new kinetic models for the growth rate of microalgae and to develop advanced control algorithms (QPCT - Quantitative Process Control Theory) for the photosynthetic growth of microalgae in photobioreactor. A fully instrumented air-lift photobioreactor form “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati will be used for validation. To reach all the objectives, an interdisciplinary Romanian-Chinese team was assembled, having skills both in biotechnology and automation. In addition, the complementarity of the teams will produce new knowledge for both sides, by addressing new type of control strategies based on advanced techniques.
