As global population grows, fish farmers face the challenge of meeting increased demands from consumers while keeping the aquaculture industry sustainable. The EU-funded AQUOLIVE project will develop and test an effective natural fish food supplement to enhance the health of farmed salmon. The supplement will take advantage of healthy bioactive ingredients in olive oil by-products that stimulate antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, thereby boosting the immune system of fish. Thanks to a large-scale olive oil production plant, the food supplement can be mass produced and sold at competitive prices. Overall, the project will contribute to increased aquaculture production, enhanced salmon health and improved fish quality for human consumption. The AQUOLIVE project is aimed at offering the aquaculture sector a high-performance feed additive based on our patented formulation of bioactive phytochemicals obtained from olive oil production by-products (production method also patented). This solution will help Fish farmers to increase their productivity and profitability, while reducing the use of hazardous antimicrobial chemicals in intensive aquaculture practices.
