"In order to develop a sustainable aquaculture industry, better and more efficient tools are needed to monitor how the industry affects the environment. Today, this is done by counting benthic animals manually. However, the identification work requires expertise and takes a relatively long time to complete. AQUAeD aims to replace the manual environmental monitoring analyzes with digital solutions based on bacterial DNA, as well as move the analyzes out onto the facilities to achieve fast and reliable results. The project will initially compare results from traditional analyzes with the new DNA-based methods. A database of DNA data will then be established that can be used to describe environmental conditions directly without performing the time-consuming and inaccurate traditional analyses. Since the DNA analyzes are so easy to perform, the entire analysis will be carried out outside the facilities using cloud based solutions for data analysis. In order to ensure that the technology and knowledge will benefit the entire industry, a new standard for DNA-based environmental monitoring will be applied for at the end of the project. "
