Precise information to support the development of aquaculture activity in the national estuarine and lagoon systems is not currently available in Portugal, and the areas with the greatest potential for the exploitation of each of the species with commercial value have not been identified and mapped. The present proposal aims to encourage the growth of aquaculture activity in Portuguese estuarine and lagoon systems by identifying and evaluating areas with high exploration potential through the development and exploration of high-resolution numerical models dedicated to the production of maps of physical- chemical and microbiological data by commercial species in Portuguese systems identified for aquaculture exploitation. This proposal proposes the implementation of high-resolution biophysical models for Portuguese estuaries and lagoons, making use of the experience of the research team at the University of Aveiro, and has as an innovative concept the integrated use of complex numerical models for the development of variable maps physical-chemical and microbiological tests that will allow the establishment of Exploitation Indices for each species of commercial value on a local scale, to be included in a Web GIS environment and to be made available to aquaculture companies and the general public. The information resulting from the work carried out in this proposal will be available for inclusion in aquaculture portals and will allow the provision of knowledge of the ideal locations and conditions of areas and species with the greatest potential for exploitation in national estuarine and lagoon systems. The results of this project will allow the transfer of academic knowledge to the sector's business community, allowing for more effective mapping and evaluation of aquaculture production areas, as well as the identification of ideal conditions for different species of commercial value, which will enhance productive income, as well as the increase in production towards the quota to be reached in 2025, in line with the objective of Ordinance No. 214/2016.
