Summary	The most central R&D challenges under subproject 1 (water quality in marine hatcheries) have been to gain a good understanding of water quality and recycling in marine hatcheries, especially the chemical and microbial processes. In this project, we have acquired new knowledge about marine water quality by describing the chemical and microbial processes in scallop recycling plants and flow-through plants for cod. We have done this by mapping the chemical processes and the microbial community present in the seawater, as well as following and describing the development of the microbial community structure over time in scallop recycling plants and flow-through plants for cod fry. Results obtained from the project have led to new knowledge about water treatment methods for marine hatcheries. The main goal of the project is to improve the knowledge base about water quality and recycling in the hatchery for marine cold water species such as cod and scallops, as well as to optimize the algae cultivation system, to reduce risk and increase the production of fry. The following sub-goals are included: (1) Describe the chemical and microbial development in water quality over time in recycling plants; (2) Investigate the effects of recycling on the scallop production of scallops; (3) Improve existing water treatment methods by controlling microbial development; (4) Develop and optimize a continuous algae production system for use in cold water hatcheries.
